There was a time I thought my struggles had made me wiser than most. I’d battled a childhood illness that shaped me deeply, and I believed my life was unfolding exactly as God had promised. In April 2015, I was newly engaged and preparing for my dream life: marriage, family, stability. But everything changed in an instant. The day after our wedding, my husband revealed his true self, and I was pulled into a storm of emotional abuse, gaslighting, and manipulation. The man I married wasn't who he pretended to be. And when he finally admitted — one year in — that he never wanted kids and never would, my heart shattered.
I felt trapped. Broken. Alone. But then… I chose myself. I left. Not with hatred or bitterness — but with clarity, strength, and compassion. I knew who I didn’t want to become, and I chose to rise instead. The years that followed weren’t easy. I struggled with flashbacks, depression, loneliness, and hopelessness. I questioned everything — especially God. But I did the work. I found healing through experiential therapy, neurofeedback, and a Bible podcast called Bema that reshaped my faith entirely. I found a new community, deep friendships, and a version of myself I actually loved.
I stopped living in survival. I stopped waiting to be chosen. I stopped looking for someone to fix me. And I became… me. Now, I’m a woman grounded in her truth, calm in her nervous system, full in her joy — with or without a partner, with or without all the things I thought I needed to feel “whole.” I’m sharing this story not because it’s special — but because I know so many other women are living in it right now.
